If the above statement does not apply to you, you are not unusual or different from many other people who you meet every day at work, socially or even at home. What makes the difference is discovering that you have a choice of options open to you and deciding to find out what is the most appropriate way forward for you.
If you do feel that the time is right to begin to explore and understand your life and make significant improvements you are not on your own. It is estimated that around 300 people out of 1,000 will experience mental health distress every year in Britain (Goldberg, quoted by MIND, 2007), and that approximately 9.2 per cent of adults will actively seek help for anxiety and mild depression that they feel is affecting their lives (Office for National Statistics, 2000).
Counselling is a form of help that many people turn to when they want to get a fresh perspective on their lives. Known as a talking therapy, counselling is recognised as being a supportive, effective and confidential way forward for people who are ready to make changes in their lives.
To see whether counselling would help you at this particular phase in your life take our on-line test below (please note: this is not a diagnostic tool, but an exercise aimed at helping you consider your personal situation):
Put a tick against each statement which applies to you.
Work is no longer a pleasure
Activities with friends and family are no longer fun
You are doing more, but accomplishing less
You feel things will fall apart if you stop
  You feel out of control
  You are always worrying
You are not as effective at doing what you've always done
You have a growing sense of mental, emotional and/or physical exhaustion
  You feel emotionally dead
You no longer feel close to friends and family
  Concentrating is difficult
You are doing more of (or some of) watching TV, drinking, eating junk food, shopping, internet
You are aware of physical problems, such as headaches, back pain or repeated viral illness.
1 - 5 ticks
You are suffering from low levels of stress. Be aware of how frequently you experience these feelings and how successfully you can cope with the normal stresses of everyday living. If one particular area is dominating your life you would probably benefit from sharing your feelings with a counsellor.
5 - 10 ticks
You are showing high levels of uncontrollable stress in certain areas of your life. Consider what situations or relationships make you feel most out of control. Do you have a good support network of friends and family or are you feeling increasingly isolated in all areas of your life? You would certainly benefit from working with a counsellor to help you identify your strengths and give you focus to face your issues and make changes.
10 - 13 ticks
You are in danger of suffering burnout if you do not take some positive action to help yourself. Counselling may be appropriate as a complementary therapy at this stage. However, it is very important that you consider your long term physical and mental health options with your GP first.
What is counselling?
At the simplest level counselling offers individuals the opportunity to be really heard by an empathic listener in a non-judgemental environment. Of course, it is naturally a little more complex than this! Counselling is based on two people (the counsellor and the client), who are prepared to work together over a period of contracted time, with the purpose of enhancing the client's understanding of themselves. This increased personal awareness allows clients to ultimately make choices to improve their emotional wellbeing and learn from often difficult experiences and issues.
Counselling is one way people can personally develop, it is not the only form of help available - advice, education, friendships and other relationships are also important to us when we are going through periods of change and uncertainty.
